PRINCE Charles is the first in line to the throne and will succeed his mother Queen Elizabeth II.
Here is what we know about His Royal Highness' eventual accession.
Will Prince Charles be King?
The throne will pass to Prince Charles if Her Majesty abdicates or dies.
He is described as the "heir apparent" to the Crown as he is the eldest son of the reigning monarch.
Charles is the oldest and longest serving heir to the throne, as well as the longest serving Prince of Wales.
Unless His Royal Highness dies before his mother or declines the Crown he will be King following her death or abdication.
Will Camilla be Queen?
Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles wed in a civil ceremony in Windsor Castle on April 9, 2005.
The wedding required royal approval from Her Majesty, who did not herself attend the service.
After the wedding Camilla was styled Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall, rather than Princess of Wales.
Since both Charles and Camilla were divorcees there has been speculation over how she will be known after Charles takes the throne.
The Palace has always insisted that the Duchess will be styled Princess Consort when the time comes, indicating that she would decline the title of Queen.
But a recent redesign of the couple’s official website has seen the explicit statement about plans to be Princess Consort removed from Camilla's biography.
However no official announcement has been made so the presumption is she will still be referred to as the Princess Consort.
What will Charles be called?
Speculation was rife in 2005 that The Prince of Wales would give up the name Charles when he ascended the throne due to unfortunate associations with that name.
Charles I was the only King in English history to be tried and executed for treason following the Civil war.
His son Charles II was known for his extensive extra-marital affairs and also ruled over a time of plague and the Great Fire of London.
According to The Guardian, the Prince, who was christened Charles Philip Arthur George, held private talks with “trusted friends” about the possibility of using his third middle name and reigning as George VII.
This would follow his grandfather George VI who was known as Albert, Duke of York, until he succeeded his brother following the abdication.
But Clarence House promptly denied these rumours and it is now considered more likely that he will be called Charles III.
