There’s nothing like a man with a deep husky voice whispering sweet nothings in your ear. When it comes to these 15 famous men, they have voices that could melt butter and do a few other things we can’t talk about on MadameNoire.
Ladies fell in love with Idris Elba on HBO’s “The Wire.” Playing the second-in-command Stringer Bell, Elba’s character was killed off at the end of the third season of the hit show, much to the dismay of women everywhere. Already popular across the pond, the English actor saw his stock rise in the US thanks to HBO and he soon found work here on television and in film. Elba can currently be seen in Thor: Dark World and will play the iconic Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which is expected to hit theaters at the end of November.
James Earl Jones
James Earl Jones can thank his voice, as well as his superb acting skills, for having a long and illustrious career. Overcoming a stuttering problem at a young age, Jones got his start in theater before switching to film and television. Having one of, if not the, most recognizable voices in Hollywood, Jones has lent his voice for numerous animated characters including The Lion King’s Mufasa. But perhaps the 82-year-old actor, who has also starred in many commercials, will always be known for uttering these four infamous words, “Luke, I’m your father.”
You may not know his name but you certainly know you’re in good hands with Allstate because of him. Dennis Haysbert started acting in the late 70’s and although he has over 50 television and film credits under his name, his most consistent check has been from Allstate Insurance company. The 59-year-old actor has been the national spokesperson for the insurance company since 2003 and has been featured in over 30 Allstate commercials. Haysbert also played President David Palmer in Fox’s hit show “24.”
Before striking out on his own, Teddy Pendergrass got his first taste of fame singing lead for the R&B group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes. Before long Pendergrass gained a legion of fans, mostly women who loved to hear him croon in that signature raspy, baritone voice of his. Dubbed the Black Elvis because of his crossover popularity, the “Turn Down The Lights” singer’s promising career was cut short in a 1982 car crash that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Pendergrass passed away of respiratory failure at the age of 59 in 2010.
No one’s voice feels like silk on the ears quite like Barry White’s voice. Considered a pioneer in disco music, White became known for his sensual voice that oozed sexiness and seduction. Fans just couldn’t get enough of White. The “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe” singer sold millions of records worldwide and earned over 100 gold albums, 41 of which went platinum. White died from total renal failure in 2003. He was 58 years old.
Barack Obama made history by becoming the first Black president of the United States. While many consider him a role model for winning the highest office in the land, the 44th president is also considered a sex symbol. The commander-in-chief commands attention whenever he enters the room and his voice holds all of the authority that his position commands, a trait that many women find attractive. The president has been married to his wife First Lady Michelle Obama since 1992.
Crowned the next king of rap by many, Kendrick Lamar’s deep, bass-filled voice belies his age and size. The diminutive West Coast rapper dropped several mixtapes before releasing his independent album Section.80 in 2011 to critical acclaim. The gifted 26-year-old lyricist caused quite a stir in hip-hop a few months ago with his verse on Big Sean’s “Control,” by declaring himself the King of New York, calling out all rappers, some by name, and challenging them to step up their game.
Paul Wall’s deep voice set him apart from other Houston rappers that were emerging on the scene in the late 90’s. It also helped that Wall looked different from everyone else. Teaming up with fellow rapper Chamillionaire early on his career, Wall has gone on to release five studio albums and numerous mixtapes. In 2010, the platinum grill-wearing rapper underwent gastric surgery to lose weight. The “Chick Magnet” rapper showed off his 100 lb. weight loss in a photo shoot with his wife Crystal.
R&B singer Joe released his debut album in 1993 but it wasn’t until he promised to do “All The Things Your Man Won’t Do” in 1997 with that sexay voice of his that women stood up and took notice. By the time he released his third album, the “I Wanna Know” singer was an international star. Despite his success, Joe’s popularity in the US has waned but he still sells out shows overseas. Joe released his tenth studio album this past summer.
As one-fourth of the hip-hop group Slaughterhouse and one of the stars on VH1’s “Love & Hip-Hop,” ladies just cannot seem to get enough of Joe Budden. It could be because he is very much in tune to his softer side or because he wears his emotions on his sleeve. Or it could be every time he talks, the bass in his voice can make any woman’s knees weak. Ready to make an honest woman out of his on-and-off-again girlfriend and fellow “Love & Hip-Hop” co-star, Joe Budden asked for Tahiry’s hand in marriage in the heart of Time Square just last week.
Sir Thomas Sean Connery was just looking to make some extra money on the side when he started working backstage at a theater in 1951. Soon he was starring in films and 11 years later he took a chance by signing on as the first James Bond. With a voice that oozed like molasses, the English actor would star in seven Bonds films before hanging up the tuxedo and spy gear in 1983 for good. Ten years later, Connery underwent radiation treatment for an undisclosed throat ailment but has since fully recovered.
In the early 2000’s, Vin Diesel’s deep voice and chiseled, muscle-bound body lived on the silver screen. First gaining recognition in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan, the New York native starred in the popular Chronicles of Riddick and the Fast & Furious franchises. Sounding like a grown man on the telephone since the tender age of 15, Diesel’s deep voice also came in handy for the 1999 animation film The Iron Giant. Earlier this year, Diesel starred in Riddick and is expected to reprise his role as Dominic Toretto for the seventh installment of Fast & Furious.
He may be known for scrapping with paparazzi who are lurking outside of his apartment building but Alec Baldwin also has one of the most recognizable voices on television. It doesn’t help that he has a pair of piercing blue eyes, either. The New York native brought his signature deep voice to NBC’s “30 Rock” as the rich and conservative television executive and boss Jack Donaghy. The show wrapped up its seventh and final season last May but Baldwin has his hands busy with new wife Hilaria and newborn baby daughter Carmen. Baldwin is also the face and voice of the Capital One credit card national campaign.
With his boyish good looks and deep baritone voice, George Clooney has been winning women over since the 80’s. Grabbing bit parts on “The Facts of Life” and “Roseanne,” it was his role as Dr. Doug Ross on ER that helped Clooney become a household name. Voted the “Sexiest Man Alive” twice by People magazine, the Hollywood bachelor is once again on the market after breaking up with his girlfriend of two years former WWE wrestler Stacy Keibler.
Teenagers and young adults may recognize his distinctive, deep voice as the lady-loving Chef on the adult cartoon show “South Park” but most people remember Isaac Hayes for his career before that. Hayes gained prominence in the late 60’s with his soulful music sung in that signature voice of his. He won an Academy award for composing the theme song for the film Shaft, making him the third Black winner of an Oscar in any category. The “Walk on By” singer passed away from complications of a stroke in 2008.
